A point that Jayson Javitz oftens makes is that the claim that this is a "50-50" country is a lie. The problem is that many "conservatives" refuse to sully themselves by voting for someone who only agrees with them on 75% of the issues: they're waiting for some mythical candidate who agrees with them on 100%.
The difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals understand incrementalism - the idea that change doesn't happen all at once, but gradually over time. If conservatives ever took a pragmatic approach to politics, the liberals would be reduced to political power only in selected urban centers: New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
Arnold made an effective appeal to those who don't agree with the president or the party platform on 100% of the issues. That's something that needed to be done and that Republicans in general do a very poor job of doing.
I hope the party elders were listening...
